Lactose intolerance or maldigestion is an undiagnosed issue for some people that consume milk (even a little) – not realizing it is affecting their health !

Lactose is the carbohydrate naturally found in milk – giving milk its sweetness. The body splits lactose into 2 smaller sugars (glucose and galactose) with an enzyme produced by the digestive system called ‘lactase’. People who have insufficient lactase to break down all the lactose consumed, can suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, flatulence and/or nausea.

These symptoms are similar to other Digestive problems, so to test for a lactose problem, cut out all dairy products for 2 weeks – then reintroduce with a glass of milk. If you get a reaction, you can ask your local MD for a ‘hydrogen breath test’, to confirm a ‘lactase’ deficiency.

The treatment for a ‘lactase’ deficiency is avoidance. Avoid milk. Yogurt is more easily digestible than milk, so may be better tolerated. Cheese has very little lactose, so it may not be a problem. Taking a ‘Digestive Enzyme’ supplement when consuming dairy can improve tolerance and reduce symptoms.

If avoiding Dairy foods, remember to replace the Calcium in the diet (eg. almonds,broccoli) or take a Calcium supplement occasionally. (remember, Calcium Carbonate is cheap source of Calcium but is poorly absorbed ), and source a good ‘lactose free’ milk substitute.
